How Jim generates answers
Understanding Cancer uses an AI system called Jim. This page explains how Jim works and where its limits are.
Last updated 2 November 2026. A few sections are still being finalised, and say so.
Effective date: 2 November 2026. Operated by Matcha Tea Properties Pty Ltd, an Australian company. Payments are taken through Stripe under the name Optimised Health. WITH&MAH Limited, a Hong Kong company (company number 81348695), will take over as operator. We will tell you before that date.
Jim is an AI system
Jim is the AI inside Understanding Cancer.
When you use Understanding Cancer, you are interacting with an AI system, not a person.
Every answer in the practitioner app starts its footnote with: "Jim is an AI and can make mistakes. Please check the answer before relying on it."
Where Jim's answers come from
Jim does not search the open internet to answer you.
Jim answers from Understanding Cancer's own curated, referenced knowledge base.
Clinicians review the notes in that knowledge base.
Answers cite the notes they draw on.
Material based on our clinicians' practice experience is labelled as clinical experience, not trial evidence.
When the knowledge base doesn't cover a topic, Jim says so instead of guessing.
What Jim can get wrong
AI-generated text can contain errors. Answers can leave things out, misread the evidence, cite incorrectly, or sound confident but be wrong.
Check the sources before acting on an answer.
Use your own clinical judgement. Jim gives decision support. Jim does not make decisions.
What Jim is not
Jim's answers are education and decision support.
They are not medical advice to any patient. They are not prescriptions.
Do not stop or change a treatment because of an AI answer alone. Practitioners remain responsible for clinical decisions. Patients should discuss treatment decisions with their oncology team.
Jim provides information for people to review. Jim does not make treatment decisions.
Further wording for this section is being finalised.
Who the answers are for
The practitioner app is for registered medical practitioners.
Dose and protocol detail unlocks only after a practitioner's registration is verified.
Patients and carers never see doses.
Understanding Cancer is for patients aged 18 and over only. It does not cover children or paediatric cancer.
How your questions are processed
Your question, any case details you provide and the knowledge-base excerpts used to answer it are processed by our AI provider, Anthropic, through its commercial API.
Under Anthropic's commercial terms, this data is not used to train its models by default.
See the privacy policy for details.
Found a wrong or unsafe answer?
Use the report option in the app, or e-mail support@understandingcancer.online. Include the record reference, and leave out anything that could identify a patient.
Our clinical team reviews reports. This is not an emergency or live clinical channel.
